A simple time tracking template.
Keep the date, case, activity and hours in one place. Download the blank file for your own records, or open the example to see how it works.
A useful billable time record includes the date, case or client reference, activity, hours, hourly rate and invoice status. This free CSV opens in Excel and Google Sheets without an account.
Start with a blank timesheet
This CSV is a manual tracking template. It contains column headings and no customer data, macros or automatic calculations.
How to use it
- Open the blank CSV in Excel, or import it into Google Sheets. Save a working copy in your preferred spreadsheet format.
- Use a case reference and clear activity labels. Avoid unnecessary personal or medical information in your billing notes.
- Enter time in decimal hours. For example, 1 hour 30 minutes becomes 1.5 hours.
- For hourly work, multiply hours by the agreed rate. In the supplied layout, hours are column E and the rate is column F; a spreadsheet formula such as
=ROUND(E2*F2,2)calculates a two-decimal line amount. The CSV does not insert formulas for you. - Review the totals and mark the invoice status after billing. Keep the original time records.
The example uses invented case references and USD amounts. The template is not a one-click Billable import format; importing existing records may need column mapping.
When a spreadsheet starts creating extra work
A spreadsheet is a reasonable place to begin. If preparing invoices means copying the same entries into a second document, Billable connects the timesheet and invoice in one workflow.
